About the Hotel
The Bodmin Jail Hotel is a luxury hotel set within the restored walls of an 18th-century prison on the edge of Bodmin Moor in Cornwall. The jail was built in 1779 during the reign of George III and became notable for its progressive design, with individual cells, separate wings for men and women and improved living conditions influenced by prison reformer John Howard. Over its history, it housed debtors, civilian prisoners and members of the Royal Navy, while 55 executions took place at the site before the jail closed in 1927. Today, the former cell blocks have been transformed into spacious hotel rooms, while the old prison chapel houses The Chapel Restaurant. Original stonework, vaulted spaces and preserved architectural details give the hotel a striking connection to its darker past.
