About the Hotel

Amberley Castle is a historic castle hotel in the South Downs near Arundel, West Sussex. Its origins can be traced to a timber-framed hunting lodge built for the Bishop of Chichester in 1103, which was gradually transformed into a fortified residence with battlements, curtain walls and a portcullis. During the Civil War the royalist stronghold was attacked in 1643 and part of its defences and Great Hall were destroyed. Today, the surviving medieval buildings and walls contain 19 individually designed bedrooms, historic dining rooms, formal gardens and leisure grounds, offering guests the unusual experience of staying within a working medieval castle.
